Supplies for Winter homeschooling

You will need the basic supplies in every season of homeschooling, like pencils, colored pencils, paint, paper, notebooks, tape and glue, but I want to lean in to our current season, WINTER.

Now when winter is discussed there are two groups of people, those who LOVE it and those who DESPISE it. I’m going to talk to both groups in this post.

No matter where you land on your love or displeasure of winter, it is just a fact that we tend to crave warmth, coziness, connection and light.

SOME ITEMS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR WINTER HOMESCHOOL:

Happy Light- When winter comes and the light fades, it impacts our every cell. In the past, various people in our family have dealt with seasonal affective disorder and this light helped a lot. I especially pull this out at the beginning of the winter to help us transition to the darker existence. Free option: get morning light on your bare eyeballs. This has made an even larger impact for us.

Essential Oils- We use our beginners box for many things throughout our school day from bumps, bruises, emotions, focus + peace [What mama doesn’t want peace?]

Regular Library Visits- Getting out of the house and seeing a new place can shift attitudes real quick. We also REALLY love books in this home, so getting to choose new things to read is a gift that often leads to a large chunk of quiet reading time.

String lights- Again, the more light, the better. Creating a cozy atmosphere can really impact how you feel + move through your day. We hang some in the kitchen around the window and in the basement playroom for all the cozy vibes.

LED candles- Another option for amping up the cozy vibes in the windows.

Homemade bread- Homemade bread definitely falls into the cozy category. I make a few different recipes and stock the freezer so we always have some on hand.

Christmas School- Taking a break from your usual routine just feels good. We tend to have a lot of things we want to experience in the Christmas season, so we do Christmas School with Read Aloud Revival Premium. It allows us all to take a breath and find joy in learning again. You can join in too!

RAR Premium- Family book clubs are the BEST. We have always been a ver relaxed/bookish family, so joining RAR Premium was a no brainer. We find so much joy and connection in the monthly book clubs and love getting the chance to meet some of our favorite Authors. The coaching offered for Moms is also AMAZING and worth the membership alone :)

Books- There are just too many to list…but I do have some suggestions coming here: Christmas Books for Adults, Christmas Books for Kids, Favorite Books for anytime, Homeschool Encouragement Book List,

Blankets- We have two footstools full of blankets that we pull out all season long. Cotton waffle weave blankets, soft Primalush blankets, knit throws, or just some finished off fleece from the fabric store are some of our favorites.

Good snow gear- Land’s End Iron Knee Snow Bibs have served my very active boys well over the years. As they are growing larger, we may shift to Carrhart bibs like Steve and I have. Land’s End often runs a 50% off sale which makes them about $40.

Shovels-

Pallets—diy igloo anyone? My husband is able to bring pallets home from work and we construct an igloo to cover in snow for fun all winter long.
